Madagascar produces cobalt from the Ambatovy laterite nickel-cobalt project in the Moramanga District, operated by Sherritt International and Sumitomo Corporation. Ambatovy is one of the world's largest laterite nickel-cobalt operations, with a high-pressure acid leach (HPAL) processing plant producing nickel and cobalt sulfate.
Responsible Sourcing Status
Madagascar is not classified as a conflict-affected area under OECD definitions. Ambatovy operates under a comprehensive Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) and has implemented an Integrated Management System covering environmental, health, safety, and social performance. The operation has received ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 certifications.
Environmental Considerations
The Ambatovy project is located in a biodiversity-sensitive area of eastern Madagascar. The operation has implemented significant biodiversity offset programs and maintains a dedicated conservation team. Tailings management and acid mine drainage from the HPAL process are key environmental management priorities.
Production Profile
Ambatovy produces approximately 3,000–4,000 tonnes of cobalt per year in the form of cobalt sulfate, primarily sold to battery manufacturers in Asia and Europe. The operation's cobalt is generally accepted by downstream buyers as meeting responsible sourcing requirements.
